| Before
we decided on a breeding program for our dogs, we researched about the
German Wire-haired Pointer breed. We learned what the German Wirehair
should be expected to do. We also learned what instincts the dog should
have. We really enjoy our Wirehairs individually and think that they
each fit our standard.
We
strive to produce genetically sound dogs that naturally perform.
We also have an excellent breed consultant, . Max has
unsurpassed knowledge on the German Wirehaired Pointer breed and has
been able to acquire, for our kennel, some wonderful German dogs.
We maintain that it is possible to have a dog where "Come" and "Whoa"
are the only commands that need to be taught. A good hunting companion
should hunt, point and retrieve whatever is being hunted, naturally
without coaxing. The great hunting dog should have a good temperament,
thus, making it an excellent, loyal family dog.
We breed for the
following natural qualities with a strong German background:
Desire: We think that this
is the most important quality. Desire is genetic, it cannot be taught!
This is the desire to please it's master and to do whatever it takes to
retrieve wounded game. This includes the desire to hunt until it cannot
physically hunt any longer. This high desire can make up for some of
the other aspects of the perfect dog.
Nose: Next on our list of
importance. We ask, "Does the dog know instinctively how to use it's
nose."
Pointing and
retrieving: These qualities are
important! The dog must naturally point and then bring back the wounded
game.
Coat: Is the dog well
covered on top as well as underneath and on it's legs. This ensures the
versatility of the breed. The ultimate dog should not be overly cold
when retrieving ducks in very cold temperatures.
Temperament:
We
think that it is important for the dog to be a good family dog that is
easily house trained. Children should be able to be part of the dogs
life just like it's master. It is important to have a good family dog -
this quality rounds out the great hunter.
When
these characteristics are put together, a well-rounded versatile
hunting dog is achieved. It is possible to have a dog that does it all
- even though as we all know, all dogs are not perfect. However, a dog
that hunts upland game birds, waterfowl and will also hunt raccoons and
other furred animals is a rare dog indeed. Thus, if the ultimate
hunting companion that naturally performs is considered important,
then, this is the dog for you!
